I opened the House of Rice Store on April 1, 1977 at this same location and have remained the sole owner/operator for over 43 years.

Half the store is a grocery store, with the basic ingredients to cook Japanese, Chinese and Dutch/Indonesian meals. We also have some basic Thai and Indian curry pastes and condiments as well as premade frozen potstickers, springrolls and sushi grade fish. Although we have a small produce selection, fresh ginger and baby bok choy are almost always in abundance in our cooler! In the other half of the store we have dishes, cooking utensils and cutlery, folding fans and craft items such as origami and calligraphy sets. There are always novelty items that keep our younger customers delighted!

Many thousand of students have passed through the cooking classes that we conducted from 1977 through 1994. The original business plan was to teach people how to use the items in the store! It worked well but there is only so many hours in a day and as life moves on, so must business diversity. Still almost daily, people ask if we will bring back the cooking classes that taught everything from sushi to stir fry, from Pad Thai to Sukiyaki. The kitchen stools gave way to storage shelves as we transitioned into internet sales and although it was sad to see that teaching phase of the business go, the internet brought on a diversified stream of revenue that still helps maintain our existence.

Our retail store is still open 7 days a week, although due to the Pandemic we have slightly modified hours.

Monday through Saturday 10:00 to 5:00 Sunday 11:00 to 4:00

On behalf of myself and my mini crew of dedicated employees, Thank you for your support, stay safe and Happy Cooking!
